The giant salmon farm project makes the ecologists jump

This Saturday, October 15, the deputy of Gironde Nicolas Thierry (EELV) sent a written question to the government to draw its attention to the project of a salmon aquaculture farm in Verdon-sur-mer, in Gironde. The Pure Salmon Company intends to produce 10,000 tonnes of this highly consumed fish there, after an investment of 275 million euros.

The MP is concerned about the environmental consequences of this gigantic installation, in a Natura 2000 classified area. In addition to water consumption, he points to high energy expenditure estimated at 75 GWh/year, i.e. the equivalent of the annual consumption of a city of 10,000 inhabitants.

As the company Pure Salmon must settle on a “turnkey” site of the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux, for which the required impact studies are not established “clearly” according to the deputy, he requests an impact study “complete and serious”.
