The future of pensions must be shaped now – opinion

Even without the suggestions of economist Schnitzer, it has long been clear that the system cannot survive in its current form. It would make sense to tackle a reform soon.

It was foreseeable that Monika Schnitzer would now face a lot of opposition. When the chairwoman of the Economic Wise Men demands that higher pensions should be melted down; that people work longer if they live longer; that retirement benefits no longer automatically increase with wages – that’s unpopular. But that doesn’t mean their suggestions are wrong. Rather, the economist addresses what many politicians prefer not to talk about because they fear the wrath of pensioners – a voter group that is large and growing.
