The NFT boom has now also reached Wikipedia. Huge sums of money were raised at auction for the possessions of Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales sold a digital NFT of his first entry in the online encyclopedia for hundreds of thousands of dollars. As the auction house Christie’s announced on Wednesday, the certified image file achieved a result of 750,000 dollars (664,000 euros). The image of the first Wikipedia entry says “Hello world.” (Hello World). The Apple computer on which Wales programmed the first version of the platform sold for $ 187,500.

The NFT trend doesn’t stop at Wikipedia either

NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token – a virtual good that is unique and not exchangeable. Like cryptocurrencies, the system is based on blockchain technology. In contrast to cryptocurrencies, a non-fungible token is unique and to a certain extent a virtual collector’s item that can be sold or exchanged on the basis of a certificate. A real hype had broken out around NFT in recent months, with collectors paying millions for digital paintings, music and videos.

According to Christie’s, the historical Wikipedia replica is interactive and can be “edited” by the buyer to “recreate” the experience of building Wikipedia. Then the user can restore them “to their original state”.

Jimmy Wales announced that part of the sale would fund his WT.Social project, “a decentralized, non-commercial social network free of advertising, data tracking and collection, and disinformation”.
