The fight had been heralded as historic: the two best female boxers in the world, Katie Taylor and Amada Serrano, were the first women to fight in the main fight at Madison Square Garden in New York – which Taylor narrowly won.

For the first time, two female boxers fought the night’s main event at venerable Madison Square Garden. It was a worthy duel: the world champion of all four major lightweight titles against a world champion who has won nine titles in seven different weight classes: the Irish Katie Taylor against the Puerto Rican from New York, Amada Serrano, the two best boxers in the World.

In front of 19,187 spectators (sold out), Taylor defended the WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF lightweight titles. The fight was largely even. “I had to bang it all out,” Taylor said. She won 2-1 of the judges’ votes. In the fifth round she even went down once, but came back again.

Taylor is now undefeated in 21 professional fights, Serrano has 45 wins in 42, 30 of which ended by knockout. Both matched up in the ring for a rematch.
