Patches the cat came to the shelter at 18 kilograms – far too much for a cat. His new owner wants to lose weight with him.

He’s lugging around a few kilos of excess weight and can hardly move: Patches weighs 18 kilograms, making him the fattest cat in the world. Normal is about four to five kilos. This made him well-known on the Internet, but it is similar with animals as with humans: a little more is okay, too much is unhealthy. So Patches urgently needs to lose weight, his new owner has decided.

Kay Ford, of Virginia, adopted the cat after an animal shelter posted about him on Facebook and put him up for adoption. Since then, she has made sure that Patches gets enough exercise and the right nutrition – especially not too much. Apparently, his previous owners didn’t take good care of him, giving him more human meals than cat food. No wonder the hangover is so bloated.

The cat has already lost two kilos

Ford accompanies her cat’s diet on a Facebook page: “Patches’ Journey”. The retiree has a weakness for cats with something more to them: three years ago she tried to adopt an overweight specimen from the shelter, but someone else got the job. In consultation with a veterinarian, Ford has changed the diet of the cat, wet food is on the menu so that Patches also gets enough liquid.

The fat tomcat is absolutely not a “voracious eater”, Ford clarifies to his defence, and the animal shelter had already announced that the animal was quite choosy when it came to food. The diet is already showing initial successes, Patches has already lost two kilograms. For Kay Ford, the project is also an inspiration for himself: “We can lose weight together.” Although she herself is not unhealthily overweight, she also gained a few kilos during the corona pandemic, which she would like to lose again.
