It started in Berlin and continued in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Essen and Hanover. Blockers everywhere tried to prevent the delivery of newspapers. What began with chants continued with stones being thrown, Molotov cocktails flying, and vans bursting into flames. It was against the “blank incitement” (Jürgen Habermas) of the Springer newspapers, which were held responsible for the assassination attempt on Rudi Dutschke. The water cannons, however, could do little. The state tried to put an end to the goings-on with thousands of police officers, but fighting raged throughout the weekend. In Munich, two people died in the clashes between the police and the demonstrators, but it was never clear who was responsible.
