Anyone who wanted to write a history of the Left Party with its many molts, from the SED to the PDS to its current fragile state, could tell it wonderfully using the example of its veteran Dietmar Bartsch. The parliamentary group leader, who is still in office, joined the SED as a young man, played a central role in the PDS in the 1990s and was at the forefront when the Left Party celebrated unexpected successes nationwide. As a now experienced, pragmatic political professional, Bartsch has become a constant in the party, which is also important for its internal balance. After all, he seemed solid, but that helped as little against the decline of the left in recent years as all other attempts to give the party stability. At least since the result in the federal election, which was devastating for them, many no longer thought he was the right man to lead the parliamentary group. But even they can hardly believe that his resignation is now helping the party a lot.
