The famous green insurance sticker will be abolished in April 2024

The hypothesis had been discussed for many months. But, this time, it’s official: the green car insurance sticker, compulsory on all French vehicles, will be removed from April 1, 2024. “We are going to remove the green sticker. There will therefore no longer be an insurance sticker to put on your vehicle, ”declared Gérard Darmanin, the Minister of the Interior, after an Interministerial Committee for Road Safety (CISR).

“Everything will now be recorded by the insurance companies in a file” to which the police and gendarmes will have direct access during checks, he specified.

The file already operational

This deletion was requested by the insurance companies which, since 2016, have developed a file of insured vehicles (FVA). Police and gendarmes have had access to it since 2019. This file, updated “in a few hours”, is already used around 20,000 times a day by the police, explained in 2022 Florence Lustman, the president of France Insurersthe federation of insurance companies.

Failure to present the green sticker during a check is currently punishable by a fine of 35 euros.
