The exceptional singer Michael Spyres sings Richard Wagner – Culture for the first time

Outside the window, the tricolor is waving next to the obelisk. Inside the Strasbourg Opera House, an exuberantly cheerful Michael Spyres presents his new singer’s album “In the Shadows” (Erato). In just two and a half hours, the 45-year-old Spyres will be here and for the first time in his life singing a leading role in a Richard Wagner opera, the strangely dubious savior figure Lohengrin. The lively man, who is in the mood to chat and is a theater person through and through, doesn’t seem to be upset. Even if he admits that he didn’t know beforehand how difficult the third act of “Lohengrin” would be, at the end of which the hero has to complete two of the most famous opera arias, “In Fernem Land” and “My Dear Swan”.
