“The encouragement from the population is huge” – Ebersberg

Many people have already responded to the call from the Ebersberg district office and have offered shelters where war refugees from Ukraine can be accommodated. “The response from the population is huge,” said Brigitte Keller, head of the central and education department at the district office, now on the sidelines of an event at the authority. On Sunday, this called on the district citizens to provide accommodation for people who are fleeing the Ukraine war. Anyone who can offer appropriate capacities should contact the district office at the e-mail address [email protected].

Apparently, some Ebersbergers have already followed this call. On Sunday, 32 emails were received by the district office, as Brigitte Keller now said. “People are very open-minded.” If you send an offer to the district office, you will currently receive an automatic reply. According to Keller, this is because the authorities first have to agree on how to proceed. “We have to see how we organize everything,” she said. We are in contact with the relevant ministries about this. It is therefore not yet possible to answer open questions from citizens, such as whether they will receive payment for the accommodation they have provided. That will become clear in the next few days, says Keller, adding: “People aren’t here yet.”

But when the time comes, the district wants to be prepared. Already last Thursday there was a first internal meeting in the district office. On Friday morning, the Upper Bavarian district administrators and the district president of Upper Bavaria exchanged views on the situation and the next steps in a video conference. According to an initial analysis, the district of Ebersberg can provide around 100 beds in existing accommodation. “It is a strong moral obligation for us to help those who have to leave their homes because of this war. We will work to ensure that they can feel safe and well received here for as long as it is necessary,” said District Administrator Robert Niedergesäß.

First and foremost, accommodation is needed for this. What kind of help is needed is not yet clear.
