While COP27, the United Nations conference on climate change, opened on Sunday 6 November in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, a World Meteorological Organization report points out that the eight years, including 2022, are the eight hottest years in our history.
According to this report, the year 2022 will not only remain as a record year for climate disasters, but it is also a record year for the measurable consequences of global warming. The effects of this warming are accelerating in almost all areas, warn the authors of the text.
The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in August 2021, pointed to a global temperature increase of 1.09 degrees compared to the pre-industrial era. According to the World Meteorological Organization, it is now 1.14 degrees compared to the same period.
The rate of sea level rise has doubled since 1993, while sea temperature records were set last year. In addition, the melting of glaciers is spectacular. Switzerland, for example, lost 6% of ice between 2021 and 2022. Overall, alpine glaciers lost between three and four meters in thickness in 2022.

The Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization, Petteri Taalas, considers in this report that the objective of a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees by the end of the century, set by the Paris Agreement, is now “barely within reach”.
