The earth trembles in the Pyrenees, a college evacuated in Haute-Garonne

The earth shook this Monday, at 3:28 p.m., near La Mongie and Bagnères-de-Bigorre, in the Hautes-Pyrenees. This earthquakeof magnitude 4 and occurred at a depth of 14 km, according to the national site for information on seismicity in France, led to the evacuation of the Bertrand-Laralde college in Montrejeau, located in the Haute-Garonne, about thirty kilometers as the crow flies from the epicentre. Cracks appeared in the establishment just after the earthquake.

College closed on Tuesday

Some 200 students and 45 adults had to leave the scene, while firefighters were called. “After a first reconnaissance, the firefighters found several cracks, including one on a pillar”, indicates at the end of the afternoon the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service of Haute-Garonne (Sdis 31). Three machines and ten firefighters are still on site for “additional reconnaissance”.

The town hall of Montréjeau already indicates that the college will be closed on Tuesday, pending the results of an expertise on the building.
