The year 2022 will also be dominated by electromobility. So, in the first part of the preview for the automotive year, we’re looking at the Stromer, which will be available at dealerships from January.

Without SUVs, nothing will work with the electric vehicles in the coming year either. But anyone who is now expecting a veritable glut of electric crossovers is mistaken. Because in 2022 a few sedans and coupés will fill the dealerships. We are particularly excited about the electric version of the Fiat Panda and the range monster Nio ET7, which is supposed to break the 1,000 kilometer limit. The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 caused a sensation among the Kraftmeier faction. It will be exciting to see whether the AMG principle also works with electric vehicles. Of course, the car manufacturers also rely on e-SUVs. After all, the segment is still growing. It looks like the Audi Q6 e-tron is still waiting until 2023, which the Polestar 3 uses to overtake the Tesla Model Y with its stylish design. The crossover version of the Mercedes EQS will surely find buyers, as will the Smart SUV in China. That the VW ID. Buzz has a sympathy bonus is out of the question. In the coming year, the e-hippies (and not just them) will be happy about the Stromer Bulli.

But one after anonther. When it comes to Stromers, it’s always a good idea to go for a retro card. The successful electric rebirth of the Renault 5 is still a while in coming, so the Fiat E-Panda will probably take the opportunity towards the end of the year and jump into the breach. Presumably the tradition-conscious Italians will take some optical borrowings from the classic with the electric Panda and use the Fiat 500e technically. The next Smart, on the other hand, will break with all of the brand’s traditions, as the Stromer will be an SUV that will be built in China together with Mercedes shareholder Geely. The basis for the crossover Stromer is Geely’s Sustainable Electric Architecture (SEA) architecture. Since the platform is very modular and also suitable for larger vehicles, the next Smart will also be around 4.30 meters long and create significantly more range than the current model. We reckon that nominally around 400 kilometers will be there.

With a length of 4.69 meters, the Toyota bZ4X clearly exceeds the Smart. There is also an extremely flat battery with 71.4 kilowatt hours. With the optional all-wheel drive, the crossover has 160 kW / 218 PS, with front-wheel drive it is 150 kW / 204 PS. The range varies between 460 kilometers (all-wheel drive) and 500 kilometers with a driven axle. Subaru has an interesting debutant with the electric crossover Solterra, which was developed together with the Toyota bZ4X and therefore, contrary to the Subaru tradition, will also be available with front-wheel drive. The Skoda Enyaq Coupé, of which there will be a significantly more powerful RS variant later, will move in similar horsepower dimensions. The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric is the French answer to the compact class electric vehicle and offers a range of up to 470 kilometers with the 60 kWh battery.

China is coming

The dimensions of the Polestar 3 are more aimed at the Audi e-tron and will share the technology with the Geely Zeekr 001 crossover. So we assume around 400 kW / 544 all-wheel hp and around 90 to 100 kWh battery capacity, which is also good for a decent range. The SUV variant of the Mercedes EQS, which, like the sedan, uses the EVA architecture, will also play in these regions. It is therefore worth looking at the sedan for performance and range, which has up to 385 kW / 523 PS and can travel a maximum of 784 km according to the WLTP cycle. With around 441 kW / 600 PS, the BMW iX M60 is the Munich-based carmaker’s most powerful electric model for the time being. VW apparently wants to bring the ID.6 onto the market not only in China but also in Europe in the next year.

Another derivative of the luxury electric car is the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53. As with the versions with a combustion engine, the Affalterbacher speed specialists add 484 kW / 658 hp and the predicted range of 584 km is also decent. It is quite possible that a 63 version will top it all. Mercedes does not leave it at the EQS, but with the EQE pushes a 4.94 meter long “little” brother, with which the wheelbase with a length of 3.12 meters is nine centimeters shorter but still considerable. In summer, the Mercedes EQE 350 with 215 kW / 292 PS / 530 Nm makes the start, which is based on the EVA2 platform and, thanks to a 90 kWh battery pack, promises an electric range of 550 to 660 kilometers.

1000 km range

At Nio you can only smile about these values. Thanks to a 150 KWh battery, the Nio ET7 should travel up to 1,000 kilometers (NEDC) on one battery charge. With 480 kW / 653 PS, the handsome sedan is in the range of the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53. The Coupé-Sedan Genesis Electrified G80 with all-wheel drive, 272 kW / 370 PS and 700 Nm of torque is not quite as brute. Thanks to the 800-volt technology, the energy cells should be filled from ten to 80 percent within 22 minutes. The maximum range is 520 km. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and the Hyundai Ioniq 6 will also be equipped with the fast 800-volt charging technology. The Ioniq 5 has rightly quickly acquired a fan base due to its design, the space available and the driving characteristics. Now the Koreans are adding the N version. There are rumors of 420 kW / 570 PS. The sister company Kia brings the new Niro onto the market, which will also be available in purely electric form in addition to the PHEV and hybrid versions.

VW will finally pull the cloth off the ID next year. Buzz. But under the dress of a popular figure there is well-known technology. Because the electric Bulli is based on the MEB electrical construction kit, which is why there should be different battery sizes and drives. Whether the production model will reach the five-meter length of the study is still in the stars. The MEB platform is there. However, the VW ID family has advantages in terms of space economy, so that an airy interior feeling arises even with a few centimeters. That shouldn’t be a problem with Ford’s fully electric E-Transit van, which will be available from spring with a WLTP range of 317 kilometers.
