Prudence, reason, no excessive tendency to self-expression: It is well known what Olaf Scholz stands for. So it is not only in the nature of things, but also in that of the Federal Chancellor to put the plans to expand the Chancellery in Berlin on hold: it is one of the largest seats of government in the world anyway. Wanting to double the 25,000 square meters of usable space in Berlin again, for half a billion euros, seemed obscene to many four years ago when the plans were presented. The expensive pandemic hadn’t even started then. The costs are now estimated at 777 million. But not only the experts from the Federal Court of Auditors fear that they could end up even exceeding a billion. In the meantime, there have been a few more costly crises.
