The discount at the pump promised by the government will be 15 to 18 cents including tax per liter of fuel. The implementation of this discount will be effective next Friday according to a decree expected on Saturday. It will go up to 18 euro cents for consumers in France, the Ministry of Ecological Transition announced to AFP on Friday March 25, confirming information from the Parisian.

This difference is explained by the amount of VAT applied in the various French territories, said the ministry. Faced with soaring fuel prices, less than a month before the presidential election, Prime Minister Jean Castex announced in mid-March this discount at the pump, from April 1 and for four months.

“We wanted the discount at the pump of 15 cents per liter of fuel to apply to everyone. The discount is calculated on the basis of 15 cents excluding tax, which explains why the discounts are different depending on the amount of the VAT applied to petroleum products”the ministry added.

“The VAT being 20% on the mainland in Metropolitan France, the discount at the pump will be 18 cents per liter including tax for the consumer. It will be around 17 cents in Corsica where the VAT is 13% and 15 cents in Overseas, where there is no VAT on petroleum products”, detailed the ministry. The price displayed at the pump will include the reduction. The distributors will themselves benefit upstream from the discount, at the level of the purchasing groups, from Sunday, which should allow the system to be fluid when it comes into force.
