There are countless passages in Victor Klemperer’s diary from 1933 to 1945 that make me catch my breath or involuntarily press my lips together. One of them is the entry from June 24, 1943. It hardly differs from other passages in which Klemperer records how others react to his Jewish star. And yet he touches me more than many others.
