The department will experiment with “a form of basic income” from May

Jean-Luc Gleyze, president of the Gironde departmental council. – M.Bosredon / 20Minutes

This Monday, the department of Gironde voted for the establishment of a “form of basic income” with a device intended for young people, including students, aged 18 to 29, in precariousness because of the health crisis .

This original device, called Cap’J Crise, which will be tested from May, will concern 300 to 500 young people selected by traditional structures (health networks, social action, etc.). Aid will be paid to them, for a period ranging from three to a maximum of 12 months, in the amount of a maximum of 3,000 euros in total. The young people will be followed by a referent.

Helping young people in times of crisis

“It is a question of responding to the urgency” in the face of the precariousness of young people “which has increased, in Gironde as in France”, explained to the press the president of the PS of the Department Jean-Luc Gleyze, who has been campaigning since long for the establishment of a universal basic income.

This new device, which extends an already existing measure for 18-25 year olds but not students, is “a form of basic income. It may look like it but it is not his primary intention, ”added the socialist.

The Department will finance this experimental action over 18 months to the tune of 820,000 euros. According to the Assembly of French Departments, this device which extends aid until the age of 29 is relatively original, while many departments are trying to respond to the crisis affecting young people, seniors, the precarious, etc.
