The conversion project of the old coal-fired power plant revised downwards

The establishment of a renewable fuel production unit on the site of the Gardanne thermal power plant (Bouches-du-Rhône), formerly coal-fired, will be completed by 2025 but with a reduced production capacity compared to to the original project.

Led by Hy2gen, a pioneering green hydrogen company based in Germany, the project was modified after a public consultation, the conclusions of which were published on Tuesday, to take into account criticism from residents who were worried about their health. in an area that is already heavily industrialized.

50,000 liters of kerosene per day

The future unit will no longer be classified as Seveso (a statement designating industrial sites at risk) after the manufacturer’s decision to abandon the production of methanol which was to supply ships in the ports of Marseille-Fos and Toulon.

The site’s total production capacity from green hydrogen and biomass will also be halved to reach 50,000 liters of kerosene per day instead of the 100,000 liters initially planned.

The overall budget for this new project is now 250 million euros against 460 million euros in the initial version. The commissioning of this project, presented so far under the name of “Hynovera” but which will be renamed, is now scheduled for the end of 2028 with around fifty direct jobs at stake and 200 indirect, according to the company.
