The construction site as a meaning of life: Hans Kleinschmidt restores an old brickworks – Bavaria

For 20 years, Hans Kleinschmidt has been renovating, restoring, caring for and protecting an old brickworks in the Allgäu that would otherwise fall into disrepair. How a Leberkässemmel gave him the idea and why even ministers are enthusiastic about his project.

Without Leberkässemmel, Hans Kleinschmidt would not be the owner of an old brick factory. And without Hans Kleinschmidt, the brick factory, which was closed in 1974, would probably still be modern. Trees would grow on the roof, waterfalls from the rain flood the interior. But his buddy was hungry, about 20 years ago, when the trained stone sculptor Kleinschmidt was looking for a studio. They happened to be nearby, so the buddy in Erkheim got his meat loaf. And Kleinschmidt took the opportunity to show him the abandoned brickworks. “I thought that was a sight.”
