After 40 years, the time has now come: The children’s library in Blutenburg Castle will be modernized and will therefore be closed from November 1st to March 21st, 2024. Although regular lending operations cannot be offered in the next few months, a limited return of books and other media is being organized. This is possible from November 2nd on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and on Tuesday between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
The children’s library is one of the most heavily frequented places in Blutenburg Castle and, in addition to a loan collection of around 27,000 books in more than 23 languages, offers a diverse course and creative program for children and families. The Federal Ministry for Family Affairs made the construction funds available for the comprehensive redesign.
The historic rooms are to be equipped with accessible, child-friendly shelving, a new counter system and modern profile lights based on the planning of students from the Technical University of Munich. The interior design concept aims to open up the beautiful space with its characteristic columns and old vaults and transform it into an experience with a high quality of stay. The reopening with a large family celebration is planned for March 22nd.
During the closure, most children’s library events will take place in alternative rooms, including the popular light house crafting and the traditional light house festival on December 8th. The remaining IJB rooms and the current exhibitions are not affected by the renovation and remain freely accessible.
