When you’re chasing a human, says Rob Dick, the most important thing is that you forget about them quickly afterwards. You can hunt him for weeks, for months, until you know what his favorite food is for dinner and where he spent his summer vacation last year. But when the time comes, when you knock on the right door or pull him out of his car, when you wrestle him to the ground and handcuff him, take him to jail and pocket your bounty, then you must forget him. Usually, Dick says, he’s good at it, he’s a pro. You could ask him who he followed last week, he can hardly remember it. But there’s this one case, says Dick, rocking in his desk chair, which grabbed and devoured him. And sometimes he wonders if this case will ever set him free again.
