At the Emmy Awards on Monday, “The Bear” was the big winner: The show won ten trophies, including best comedy series and awards for the actors. The two seasons are about top chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, who takes over the family’s old sandwich shop after the death of his brother and wants to take it to a new level. Plagued by feelings of guilt, sadness, his own demands and the complicated family history, he has to find his way again. The hype surrounding “The Bear” is huge: five reasons why the show is so popular.
1. Lead actor Jeremy Allen White
It’s all about him: Jeremy Allen White plays the main character Carmy. The show served as a star catalyst for White, who was previously known primarily for the series “Shameless.” Awards rained down on the 32-year-old, including now again at the Emmys. However, his advertising campaign for Calvin Klein made him the pop culture phenomenon of the moment. The photos of the toned White in the famous boxer shorts caused an uproar and memes online for days. A star is born.
2. Yes, Chef: The fascinating world of top cuisine
The catering industry is the hidden hero of the series: Rarely have you had such a detailed insight into the world of top cuisine. The almost military-style exclamation “Yes, boss!” at the stove quickly became a household word among fans. Especially in the second season, the audience learns together with the characters what is important in the star kitchen, when every second counts and perfection is expected at all times. The stress and chaos in the hectic environment come across believably, as does the personal level when almost family bonds develop in kitchen teams. Anyone who has ever worked in the catering industry will recognize the atmosphere in the show.

3. Chicago instead of New York
The Berzatto family lives in Chicago, and Carmy returns there after his brother’s death. It’s actually refreshing to experience a US city other than the eternal New York as a backdrop. The camera shows us the skyline, takes the subway through the city, and the typical “deep dish” pizza variation that Chicago is known for also plays a small role in season 2.
4. The top-class ensemble
“The Bear” is full of familiar faces, such as the great Jamie Lee Curtis as Donna Berzatto, the siblings’ troubled mother. Especially in the second season, the stars seem to have lined up to take part: Oscar winner Olivia Colman appears as Carmy’s mentor, the star chef Terry, and the Marvel superhero Will Poulter also plays a chef. Bob Odenkirk from “Better Call Saul” plays a mean uncle, Golden Globe winner Sarah Paulson plays a cousin – the list of top-class actors is long. And the actors, who are even more unknown, are also convincing. Above all, the great Ayo Edebiri as Carmy’s kitchen partner Sydney Adamu. She won the Golden Globe and the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress.
5. And of course: the food!
It’s no wonder cooking shows are so popular: it’s just fun to watch delicious food on screen. And there’s plenty of that to be seen in “The Bear”, with quick cuts and unusual images. The series manages to make even the preparation of an omelette seem exciting. The viewers are left hungry for more.
