The anime Over the Sky is shown as special programming in many cinemas – Munich

If you’ve been in love with your sandbox friend for ages but can’t tell him, you have a problem. If your best friend also falls for the same boy, that doesn’t make things any easier. On the contrary: everything becomes too much for the teenage girl Mio, she withdraws and, to make matters worse, has a bicycle accident. She goes to the hospital, where only her body remains motionless in bed. Mio’s soul is stuck between this world and the afterlife; on her way back from this intermediate world she encounters strange creatures, including goddesses, goldfish and spider monsters.

The anime “Over the Sky” was shown in Japanese cinemas three years ago, and as a result of the ongoing manga and anime boom here, the film is now also being shown in German cinemas. Only for one day (on Tuesday, September 26th), but in hundreds of cinemas across the country. This is how fans of the genre come together and how film screenings become events. This teenage love story can’t compete with the masterpieces of anime directors like Hayao Miyazaki or Makoto Shinkai, but Yoshinobu Sena’s “Over the Sky” will probably still win fans over.

This is also due to characters like Mio’s favorite cuddly toy Ginom, who is everything you would expect from such creatures (big-eyed, colorful and excited) and who accompanies the young heroine through all sorts of adventures. Only when she has passed this can Mio return to her boy of hearts. Can she then confess her feelings to him?

Over the Sky – Kimi wa Kanata, JAP 2020, directed by Yoshinobu Sena, Tuesday, September 26th, at Mathäser, Cinemaxx and many cinemas in the region
