How do you say “The animal kingdom” in english? Following the triumph of Anatomy of a fall for the 2024 Oscar nominations, it’s The animal kingdom which is ahead of Justine Triet’s film in the nominations for the César. Thomas Cailley’s film, with Romain Duris, has 12 nominations whileAnatomy of a fall has “only” eleven.
Another lesson from this burst of nominations is that the reforms undertaken at the Academy responsible for the ceremony to combat the lack of parity are starting to pay off. Three directors are thus nominated for the César for best director: Justine Triet, Catherine Breillat for Last summer and Jeanne Herry for I will always see your faces.
Four present, one absent
Furthermore, the Best Supporting Actress category presents a surprise: four of the five nominees are for the same film: I will always see your faces. They are Leïla Bekhti, Élodie Bouchez, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Miou Miou. A great reward for this choral film which shows behind the scenes of “restorative justice”, where victims confront their attackers. This success allows Jeanne Herry’s film to accumulate 9 nominations in total.
Among the absentees, we note The Passion of Dodin Bouffantwhich leaves without a major nomination even though the film represented France at the Oscars.
Also note that the César ceremony, chaired by Valérie Lemercier, will see actress-director Agnès Jaoui and director Christopher Nolan each receive an Honorary César.
