Choose the shape of the kitchen

To succeedkitchen layout, you must first choose its shape. By arranging pieces of furniture on two walls which form a right angle, you obtain an L-shaped kitchen. The installation of this corner kitchen is to be considered for a small or medium-sized room.

If the kitchen opens onto the living room, it is better to favor an L-shaped layout, in which all the kitchen elements are aligned on the same plane.

With a large enough room, you can plan a U-shaped kitchen. You will have everything at hand in this more functional room. Such a configuration also allows more user-friendliness. And it is easier to provide a central island.

It is also possible to install the kitchen elements opposite each other, as part of a parallel kitchen. However, allow enough space to be able to move around.

Think about the activity triangle

The activity triangle has become an essential concept in the planning of kitchens. It is based on the idea that certain elements, such as the refrigerator, the sink and the hob are at the center of the culinary activity.

So most of your trips are made between these three areas of the kitchen. It is for this reason that they should be placed at a roughly equal distance. Also make sure that it is not too big. And avoid installing the hob and sink in corners.

The other kitchen items should be arranged around this activity triangle. So you don’t waste time on unnecessary trips.

Another rule to respect: the path from clean to dirty

Compliance with this rule also conditions the layout of the room. It assumes the establishment of a convenient arrangement which, when the meal is finished, saves you from unnecessary movements and movements.

Thus, at the end of the meal, the dirty dishes and plates are placed on a work surface which must be easily accessible. The trash can should be in its immediate vicinity. Indeed, this is where you pour the reliefs of the meal before placing the plates in a dishwasher which must also be nearby.

And when you take your dishes out of the machine, you need to be able to store them in cupboards right next to or above the dishwasher. Circulation must be as easy as possible between all these elements.

Choose the materials

The choice of materials is the best way to imprint your mark on a room where you will be spending a lot of time. So, you can opt for wood, a material that gives a warm and authentic atmosphere to the room.

Robust and resistant, ceramic has a lot of charm. Just as resistant but perhaps more practical, stainless steel has its followers. You can still opt for resin, glass or quartz.

The main thing is not to use multiple materials and colors, so as to preserve the harmony of the room.

For floors, it is better to favor resistant materials, which allow you to quickly clean up water and grease splashes. Cement tiles, PVC or porcelain stoneware will give you satisfaction in this regard.

Don’t forget the storage

Between cooking utensils, dishes and food, you have a lot of things to store in the kitchen. You therefore need a large number of closets, large enough and rationally arranged.

For this you need to use as much space as possible. Take advantage of the entire surface of the walls, installing cupboards up to the ceiling. Provided, of course, that you can reach them without difficulty.

Also use the splashback, this space that extends between the worktop and the wall units. Why not attach storage bars to it, fitted with hooks? You hang kitchen utensils or tea towels on it. Some are equipped with shelves, where you can install your spice jars, for example.

And do not neglect the angles, where cupboards designed for this purpose can find place.

A well-lit kitchen

For a kitchen to be pleasant to live in, light and ventilation must be sufficient. In this well-lit room, it is also easier to prepare meals.

Lighting must be focused primarily on the hob, sink or storage spaces, in other words the areas where most of the culinary activity is concentrated.

For the rest, the lighting mode depends on your tastes and the configuration of the room. Some will choose a central suspension, which is probably better suited to a closed kitchen.

Others will opt instead for suspensions, fixed above the worktop. Light spots, installed in strategic places, or LED strips, on the furniture, are other possible lighting solutions.

Ensure the correct arrangement of the furniture

For your safety and ease of movement, it is essential to provide suitable dimensions for your furniture and kitchen units.

Thus, allow about 60 cm per side to install the dishwasher. If you want more room for preparing meals, allow a depth of about 65 cm for the worktop.

As for its height, it must be between 85 and 95 cm. Indeed, you should not have to bend or raise your arms to prepare your meals.

To be able to move easily, without being hampered, you need a clearance of at least 70 cm in front of your furniture. But in front of an oven or a refrigerator, it is necessary to leave at least 90 cm, to allow the opening of the door.
