The 15 safest airlines of 2021: the latest air accident statistics

2021 was another exceptional year for aviation. In the second year of the corona, not only the number of passengers fell sharply, but also the number of incidents and those of the accident victims. “According to the current status, there are 168 fatalities for the year 2021, which means almost halving the number compared to 2020 and is even 505 below the average value for the last 25 years,” says Jan-Arwed Richter from the Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Center ( Jacdec).

The Hamburg Aircraft Accident Bureau registered 671 accidents and incidents worldwide in 2021, many of which occurred with smaller propeller planes or on cargo, test, transfer or special flights. There were four spectacular accidents in the United States, but no human lives were to be mourned. The worst accident last year was the total loss of a Boeing 737-500 operated by Sriwijaya Air in Indonesia, in which all 62 people on board were killed on January 9th.

The Aircraft Accident Office also regularly analyzes the accidents and updates the statistics with the safest airlines at the beginning of the year based on the figures from the previous year. Jacdec’s accident history is based on incidents and crashes over the past 30 years. The influence of such an event on the rating decreases the longer it happened. This rewards airlines with years of accident-free flight operations. The traffic performance of the respective airline is also taken into account, although there were significant drops in 2021 even with well-known airlines.

So there are significant shifts in the latest security statistics. “The reason for this reorganization was primarily due to the changed proportions, which had shifted in favor of many airlines with strong domestic markets such as China or the USA,” says Jacdec founder Richter.
