Texel: Out and about collecting oysters off the Dutch island

At low tide, the North Sea off Texel releases countless oysters. Every guest of the West Frisian island can then collect them. Our reporter tried it.

The big question that needs to be answered straight away: Can you eat too many oysters? So far I would have definitely said no. Now I’m not sure anymore. Passed by an overdose of oysters on Texel, oh my goodness, what one would have to listen to again! It’s ten o’clock in the morning, we’re sitting in front of the flat hall of the “Visspecialist” in Oudeschild, bent over the first twelve oysters of the day. A breakfast for champions.

The shop hadn’t even opened properly yet, they were tiredly throwing tiles in front of the showcases when I pushed in, all too German in my recalcitrant brashness, and asked for oysters. Not just any ones: some from the island, from Texel, fresh and immediate, yes!
