Terror: How Satan’s Mother Haunted Brussels – Politics

Of

Josef Kelnberger, Brussels

Kristin Verellen was still in bed when her partner Johan Van Steen said goodbye to her with a fleeting hug on the morning of March 22, 2016. In the evening they want to go out together, it’s Kristin Verellen’s birthday. Around nine o’clock she hears on the radio that two suicide bombers have blown themselves up at Brussels’ Zaventem Airport. At 9.03 she calls Johan Van Steen. Be careful in the city, she wants to tell him. He does not answer. She calls him again, again, again. Occupied. Then on the radio comes the news of another suicide attack. Crime scene: Maelbeek underground station, on the line he takes every day to work.
