Terror and media: is there more to come? – Culture

Terrorism targets not only lives but also the attention of enemies. What will happen if Hamas opens the floodgates even further to its cruel images?

A story of modern terrorism cannot be told without mentioning the Middle East, Israel and Palestine at some of its landmarks. Its birth date is considered to be July 22, 1968, when terrorists from the Palestine Liberation Organization, or PLO for short, hijacked an Israeli El Al plane on its way from Rome to Tel Aviv. The sociologist Peter Waldmann would later define terrorism as a “communication strategy”, as such the spectacular actions of the Palestinians were perceived: After a few further actions, the head of the PLO delegation to the UN rejoiced, the sensational actions impressed the world public and the media far more, “than pleadings to the United Nations had done over the course of 20 years.” The course was thus set.
