Tensions have been expected in Jerusalem as Jews, Christians and Muslims celebrate their holy festivals in one day. Violent clashes broke out between Palestinians and Israeli police early in the morning.

Clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians broke out early in the morning at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. At least 59 Palestinians were injured, according to paramedics. They were taken to hospitals, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent. So far nothing is known about what triggered the violence.

The Muslim foundation in charge of the Temple Mount said police entered the site in large numbers after early morning prayers when thousands of worshipers were gathered.

Videos circulating on social media showed Palestinians throwing stones and police officers firing tear gas and stun grenades. According to the foundation, one of the supervisors at the mosque was shot in the eye with a rubber bullet.

Three Holy Feasts

The mosque is the third holiest site in Islam. It stands on a hill which, as the Temple Mount, is the holiest site for the Jews. There has been violence between Israelis and Palestinians for decades. Tens of thousands of believers are expected in the mosque this Friday in the midst of the Muslim month of fasting, Ramadan.

The tensions are currently particularly high because this year Ramadan, the Jewish Passover festival and the Christian Easter coincide.
