Demos and events against right-wing extremism also took place across Germany on Sunday. The largest protest march was in Hamburg – according to police figures, at least 60,000 people took part.
In many cities and communities, numerous people took to the streets again on Sunday against right-wing extremism and for democracy. Tens of thousands once again came together in downtown Hamburg to demonstrate against right-wing extremism. The organizers, an alliance around the Fridays for Future (FFF) movement, have registered 30,000 participants for the meeting under the motto “For diversity and our democracy – Hamburg stands together against the AfD”. After a rally with a speech by climate activist Luisa Neubauer, there will be an approximately 3.5 kilometer long demonstration procession through the city center. More than 40 organizations called for the demo, including several environmental organizations such as Greenpeace and BUND, the tenants’ association, the DGB and the Hamburg Alliance Against the Right.
The organizers had moved the originally planned meeting location on Jungfernstieg to Ludwig-Erhard-Straße – most recently, a large demonstration in the Hanseatic city was canceled because many more participants came than expected.
Events throughout Germany
According to the FAZ, demonstrations and events have been planned for Sunday in numerous cities and communities across Germany with reference to “Together against the right”. In the north, for example in Schleswig, Nortorf and Neumünster.
In the west, events are planned in Boppard, Gerolstein and Ahrweiler, among others, and in the south in Schongau, Bad Tölz and Ebersberg. In East Germany, events against right-wing extremism are to take place in Rangsdorf, Hoyerswerda, Finsterwalde, Zickau, Demmin and Neustrelitz, among others.
In Ibbenbüren near Osnabrück, the organizers of the “Ibbenbüren against the right” demonstration expected at least 2,500 participants. In Bremerhaven, the organizers spoke of more than 4,000 participants and “one of the largest demos against fascism in the city since 1945.”
According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, more than 900,000 people nationwide took part in anti-right-wing demonstrations last weekend. The ministry based the number of participants on police information. The protests were triggered by revelations by the research center Correctiv on January 10th about a meeting of radical right-wingers in which some AfD politicians as well as individual members of the CDU and the very conservative ValuesUnion took part in Potsdam.
