Tennis player Alexander Zverev has shown himself to have recovered well from his semi-final exit at the Australian Open and his illness. In the first match after the defeat in the first Grand Slam tournament of the year against the Russian Daniil Medvedev, the Olympic champion confidently reached the quarter-finals of the ATP tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico.

The 26-year-old beat Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 16 and will face Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in the next round. In the first round, the top seed Zverev had a bye.

The world number six canceled his participation in the Davis Cup qualifying round in Hungary at the beginning of February due to a viral infection. Zverev had already become ill in Melbourne on his way to the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

“I think I got a lot out of my body in January. When you’re in the adrenaline and in the matches, you keep going. And then when you calm down, it all comes out at once,” Zverev told the German Press Agency before the tournament in Los Cabos and was confident: “I played relatively well in Australia, hopefully you won’t lose that kind of form so quickly.
