The decision has been made: tennis star Novak Djokovic has to leave Australia and will therefore not take part in the Australian Open.

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic (34) has to leave Australia. The Federal Supreme Court decided on Sunday (January 16) local time as part of an online hearing, to which the negotiating parties were connected separately.

As the newspaper “The Age” further reports, Judge James Allsop Djokovic officially rejected Friday’s appeal against the renewed annulment of his visa. The decision was unanimous, explained Allsop and his colleagues Anthony Besanko and David O’Callaghan. Neither side can appeal the verdict.

As a result, he will not be able to defend his title at the Australian Open, which begins on Monday.

Novak Djokovic spent the hours before the trial in Melbourne’s Park Hotel deportation hotel. He had been taken to his attorneys’ office for the online meeting. In a first statement, he announced a comment: “I would like to make a brief statement on the results of today’s court hearing. I will now take some time to rest and recover before making any further comments,” said Djokovic.

Why is Novak Djokovic not allowed to go to Australia?

Since Djokovic entered the country on January 5, events have come and gone. First, the athlete was taken to a deportation hotel because his visa was not accepted by border guards. However, a court overturned the decision five days later. Bone of contention: Djokovic is not vaccinated against Covid-19, which only allows entry under special circumstances.

The athlete said he was exempt from Australia’s mandatory vaccination upon entry as he tested positive on December 16 and negative again on December 22. However, pictures show that he continued to show up at events during this phase – mostly without a mask. He also stated on the immigration form that he had not traveled 14 days before his flight to Australia, which has been shown to be untrue.
