Tennis player Laura Siegemund missed the semi-finals of the WTA tournament in Zhengzhou, China.

The 35-year-old from Metzingen lost her quarterfinal match against the Italian Jasmine Paolini 0:6, 5:7. After a disappointing first set, Siegemund improved significantly and fought their way back into the match with a break in the second round to make it 3:4. But after fending off four match points, she had to admit defeat to the favorite after 1:44 hours.

“I knew it would be hard,” said Paolini in the subsequent interview with the winner on the pitch: “She is a very good fighter and knows how to vary the balls. It is never easy to win against Laura.”

In the previous round, Siegemund, who had qualified for the main draw, had a three-set win against the Russian world number 16. Lyudmila Samsonova caused a surprise. The hard court tournament, worth $780,637, is now entering its decisive phase in the singles without German participation.
