Tennis player Jule Niemeier made it into the third round of the WTA tournament in Madrid with a convincing performance.

Tennis player Jule Niemeier made it into the third round of the WTA tournament in Madrid with a convincing performance.

The 23-year-old from Dortmund won her second round match against number ten seeded Czech Petra Kvitova 7: 6 (11: 9), 6: 1. In the round of the 32 best players in the clay court tournament, the world number 67 meets. on the winner of the match between Elise Mertens from Belgium and Rebecca Marino from Canada.

Shortly thereafter, Jan-Lennard Struff, who had moved into the main draw despite a defeat in qualifying, surprised with a clear 6:3, 6:1 in the first round against the stronger Lorenzo Sonego from Italy. In the fight for the third round, the 33-year-old from Warstein meets the American Ben Shelton, who had a bye at the start.

Niemeier had kept his nerve in the first round despite six missed set points and finally won the tie-break. In the second set, the Wimbledon quarter-finalist convinced with her powerful game and a strong serve. Her surprise win over three-time Madrid winner Kvitova was well deserved.

Niemeier had started the season poorly, but had recently shown increasing form and in the Billie Jean King Cup for the German team an important victory against the world number 14. Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil celebrated.
