Jannik Sinner shines and crowns a strong tennis season with the Davis Cup triumph. It is a historic title for Italy.

Led by Jannik Sinner celebrated Italy’s Davis Cup triumph for the first time in 47 years. In the final of the prestigious team competition, the 22-year-old South Tyrolean scored the decisive second point against Australia.

In the impressive 6:3, 6:0 against Alex de Minaur, the world number four confirmed his world class in Malaga. Previously, Sinner’s teammate Matteo Arnaldi won 7:5, 2:6, 6:4 against the Australian Alexei Popyrin and thus took the first step towards the Italians’ second Davis Cup title. Italy had only previously won the Davis Cup in 1976.

Sinner crowns a strong season

Sinner thus crowned a personally strong season and an excellent year-end spurt. In the semi-finals of the Davis Cup he spoiled the Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic’s hoped-for entry into the final. Sinner defeated the record Grand Slam winner first after defending match points in singles and then in doubles for the decisive win against Serbia. At the ATP finals the previous week, Sinner lost the final against Djokovic.

The German tennis men haven’t had a chance of winning this year’s Davis Cup title since February because they surprisingly lost to Switzerland and missed out on the group stage in September. Defending champion Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinals this time. The new season in the team competition begins for the German tennis men in February 2024 with an away game in Hungary.
