Tennis Grand Slam at Wimbledon: Kerber in the semifinals in a hurry

Status: 07/06/2021 8:38 p.m.

Angelique Kerber has reached the semifinals of the tennis tournament in Wimbledon with a sovereign two-set win against Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic.

Angelique Kerber is only two steps away from winning the title again after the next confident performance at Wimbledon. The 2018 winner defeated the Czech Karolina Muchova on Tuesday (July 6th, 2021) with 6: 2, 6: 3 and reached the semi-finals in the All England Club for the fourth time.

The opponent in the fight for a place in her third Wimbledon final is the world number one Ashleigh Barty, who defeated her Australian compatriot Ajla Tomljanovic 6: 1, 6: 3.

Kerber: “Enjoy every moment here”

“I enjoy every moment here. I’m so happy that I’m back in the semifinals,” said Kerber after the well-deserved victory: “I’ve worked so hard over the past few weeks and months. I left my heart on the court here.”

Dominated from the start

Kerber had already won the two previous comparisons with Muchova, but she was warned. The Czech, who is six places ahead of Kiel in the world rankings, caused a sensation in February with her semi-finals at the Australian Open. But Kerber dominated her eleventh Grand Slam quarter-finals, the fifth at Wimbledon, from the start. The former number one in the world was highly concentrated from the first rally and acted with good body language.

Slight mistakes crept in

She repeatedly attacked Muchova on the weaker forehand and immediately grabbed a break. The German also survived a first dicey situation with their own serve (4: 2). After 34 minutes, sentence one was hers. But suddenly slight mistakes crept in at Kerber. At the beginning of the second round she fended off three breakballs with strong nerves, in her subsequent service game she could no longer free herself from the same distress.

Period of weakness only for a short time

The weak phase lasted only a short time, with her notorious fighting qualities Kerber managed to re-break immediately. The many missed opportunities seemed to be having an effect on Muchova and Kerber sensed her chance. Ice cold she grabbed the decisive 4: 2, after 1:15 hours she made the semi-finals perfect with her second match point.

Second semi-final between Pliskova and Sabalenka

The other semifinals are played by Karolina Pliskova and Aryna Sabalenka. The former tennis world number one Pliskova won her quarterfinals 6: 2, 6: 2 against the Swiss outsider Viktorija Golubic. The 29-year-old has now made it into the semifinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments. In the semifinals this Thursday, the former US Open finalist will face number two seeded Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus, who beat Tunisian Ons Jabeur 6: 4, 6: 3.
