The Russian world-class tennis player Daniil Medvedev is also too strong for qualifier Yannick Hanfmann. The Karlsruher can still book the tournament as a success.

Qualifier Yannick Hanfmann’s winning streak came to an end in the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome. After Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev, the player from Karlsruhe also lost 2: 6, 2: 6 to the Russian world number three Daniil Medvedev.

For the 31-year-old Hanfmann, the first quarter-finals in a tournament in the most important category after the Grand Slam events was a success.

Medvedev, who had defeated Hamburg’s Zverev again in the round of 16, was then too strong. After a nervous start with three breaks, Medvedev was the more stable player. In the second section, too, Hanfmann fell behind with a loss of service.

From his appearances in the high-class clay court tournament, the Karlsruher can take self-confidence into the French Open, which begins on May 28 in Paris. He had surprised above all with the two victories over the top ten players Taylor Fritz from the USA and Andrei Rublev from Russia. In the world rankings, Hanfmann will move up into the top 70 for the first time and will be in better shape than ever before. At the moment he is only number 101 in the world.
