Top favorite Novak Djokovic avoided his earliest failure at the US Open since 2006 with a lot of effort and made it into the round of 16 after a show of strength.
The 36-year-old Serb defeated his compatriot Laslo Djere in the night match 4: 6, 4: 6, 6: 1, 6: 1, 6: 3. Djokovic converted his second match point after 3:45 hours at 1:32 a.m.
The three-time US Open winner in New York can thus continue to hope to expand his record in men’s tennis of 23 Grand Slam titles. In the round of the top 16, Djokovic meets the Croatian qualifier Borna Gojo.
