Ten migrants die in the accident of the truck which transported them

At least ten migrants died and 25 others were injured this Sunday when a truck in which they were traveling illegally overturned on a highway in the state of Chiapas, in southern Mexico, on the border with Guatemala, according to local authorities. The provisional report sent by the authorities shows “ten dead and 25 people injured”. A source from the prosecutor’s office, who asked not to be identified, indicated that the victims were women, including a minor, from Cuba.

The accident occurred in the early hours of the morning on the stretch of highway that connects Pijijiapan to Tonalá, on the Pacific coast of the state of Chiapas, from where many migrants seek to reach the United States. This is the second accident of this type in less than a week. Two migrants were killed and 27 others were injured Thursday when the truck carrying them overturned in the same state.

Thousands of migrants of different nationalities cross Mexico aboard buses, trucks and even freight trains in an attempt to reach the United States. The US Border Patrol officially recorded 1.8 million migrant crossings at its southern border between October 2022 and August 2023.
