Temporary work in nursing: A travel nurse reports – Bavaria

Intensive care nurse Bianca Kohl fills in at clinics across Germany that have a staff shortage. She thinks it’s a great job. However, the state government and many associations see temporary work as a danger.

On her day off, Bianca Kohl unpacks and repacks her suitcase. She washes, cleans and restocks the empty refrigerator. That’s how it always is when she comes back to Ingolstadt after an assignment somewhere in Germany. She runs to the post office, sorts out her finances, makes doctor’s appointments, calls her neglected friends. “Everything stays put,” she says. Which brings the 37-year-old intensive care nurse to the negative aspects of her job as a temporary worker in nursing, a job that she actually loves.
