Meteorologists predict temperatures of up to 48 degrees for Sicily and Sardinia, among others. By the weekend, however, the heat wave should affect the entire country.

The highest heat warning level has already been declared for four cities; Rome and neighboring Latina as well as the two southern Italian towns of Bari and Campobasso are affected. Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, the heat wave should also reach Naples, Florence, Milan and Bolzano, among others. The red warning level will then apply in a total of 27 Italian cities.

High Lucifer brings heat from Africa

The Ministry of Health recommends that people in the affected areas avoid sun and heat between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., as well as strenuous physical activity. According to the ministry recommendation, people are required to drink a lot, wear light clothing and protect themselves with hats and sunscreen throughout the day.

The state television RAI speaks of an extreme weather situation, which is also unusual in warm Italy. The heat wave is triggered by the subtropical high Lucifer, which brings hot air masses from Africa to Italy.
