“For today: goodbye”. So the new presenter Jessy Wellmer sent the viewers of “Tagesthemen” into the night.

“Welcome. It’s nice that you’re here. I’m very pleased to be able to present the “Daily Topics” to you.” So had Jessy Wellmer (43) started her first moderation of the ARD news program on Monday evening. News anchor Judith Rakers (47) at her side immediately said: “And we’re happy about that too.”

Wellmer wore a blue pants suit and a rust-red top in the ARD studio in Hamburg. She succeeds Caren Miosga, who will take over Anne Will’s political talk on Sunday evenings after “Tatort” on the first next year. Wellmer moderates alternately with Ingo Zamperoni.

The 35-minute-long program was first about the Israeli hostages kidnapped in the Hamas terrorist attack and then about the situation in the Gaza Strip. The moderator also took up German refugee policy among other topics: a conversation with Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), who was in Morocco, about migration was shown. The politician also briefly congratulated Wellmer on her first broadcast.

The 43-year-old ended her first moderation like this: “You’ll see me again tomorrow – if you like. For today: goodbye.” The TV presenter is already known to millions of viewers – from the “Sportschau” on Erste and from news programs on the ARD broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB).

Wellmer has been working for public broadcasting for many years. The journalist, who was born in Güstrow, Mecklenburg, in 1979, worked in the RBB sports department after a traineeship in the 2000s. She moderated sports on ZDF’s “Morgenmagazin” for a few years until 2014 and then returned to ARD. In addition to sports, Wellmer also moderated regional TV news on RBB, then the ARD “Mittagsmagazin” was added and there were Corona extra programs on Erste.
