According to the Federal Government, the Russian President has explained to the Federal Chancellor that nothing will change for the contractual partners when it comes to paying for gas deliveries. Payments would continue to be made in euros.

In a telephone conversation with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that nothing would change when it comes to paying for Russian gas supplies to European contract partners. This was announced by government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit.

The payments would therefore continue to be made exclusively in euros and, as usual, would be transferred to Gazprom Bank, which is not affected by the sanctions. The bank then converts the money into rubles.

A week ago, Putin announced that he would only accept rubles for gas payments in future. Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck described the Russian announcement as a “breach of the treaties”.
