More and more people are using the landline to make phone calls. Because the mobile network in Germany still has weaknesses, although a lot of money is being invested in the expansion.

The landline phone is making a comeback in Germany: according to a recent survey commissioned by the comparison portal Verivox, 81 percent of those surveyed are now using a stationary connection again. This means that the proportion of Germans who make calls using a fixed network has increased compared to the previous year. Because in 2021 the proportion in the same survey was 73 percent.

Verivox expert Jens-Uwe Theumer assumes that the development is mainly due to the poor mobile phone coverage: “Mobile phone coverage leaves a lot to be desired, especially indoors.” In addition, the consequences of the pandemic could also play a role, because in the past two years people have gotten used to using landline phones again.

Landline phone so far on the “descending branch”

Nevertheless, the Verivox expert was surprised by the survey result. Because the landline telephone has long been on the “downhill”. One reason for this is that mobile phone contracts often come with a telephony flat rate and consumers therefore used their mobile phones a lot before the pandemic not only on the go, but also at home. It is therefore surprising that people continue to use landline phones more frequently even after the end of the pandemic restrictions.

Frederic Ufer from the Internet industry association VATM points out that the mobile network in Germany has already developed significantly: “In general, the network will become even more powerful with 5G.” However, the network in Germany still has weaknesses, although the telecommunications companies are investing a lot of money for better coverage.
