The fire in one Refugee accommodation on the site of the former Tegel Airport was probably built within the affected tent hall. “According to current findings, external influences on the hall can be ruled out,” said the Berlin police. The police are investigating suspected serious arson. The exact cause of the fire is still unclear.

Yesterday afternoon one of the tent halls caught fire and around a hundred firefighters were called out. According to reports, the tent with an area of ​​1000 square meters burned down completely. Several hundred people were able to be brought to safety in time. According to police, nine people had to be medically examined as a precaution. Nobody came to the hospital.

According to the operator, all residents, including children, were able to leave the burning hall in time. Animals were also in the hall and could be brought to safety. The fire department prevented the fire from spreading to other tents.

According to the State Office for Refugee Affairs, alternative accommodation for the affected people on the site was secured. The extinguishing work has now been completed, a fire department spokesman said.
