Teens more and more mobile payment enthusiasts

“Teenagers in the Ile-de-France are rather atypical,” jokes Caroline Ménager, co-founder of the Pixpay teen payment card. In a study, based on data from the 100,000 users of this card aimed at young people aged 10 to 17, the entrepreneur analyzed their consumption habits, between January and December 2021. She noted glaring disparities between the regions.

According to the study, Ile-de-France teenagers receive more money than the average, around 76 euros per month. They spend most of it on food and transportation. “Mobility is an important issue for young people in Ile-de-France”, she says. Particularly in intramural Paris, the “only place where the companies that market electric scooters, Tier, Dott and Lime, are in the ten favorite brands of young people. »

Mobile payment doubled in 2021

Online shopping, purchase of video games and others… Young people have a much more digitized consumption than that of their parents. “They make 24% of their purchases online, against 13% for adults”, according to the author of the study. Young Ile-de-France residents, however, have a relatively low use of online payment, compared to other regions. On the other hand, they are those who withdraw the least cash. “It is surely linked to the fact that the big cities accept payment cards more easily, explains Caroline Ménager. They hardly need cash anymore. »

Often they spend their money using mobile payment, through Apple Pay or Google Pay. With 13.4% of their transactions carried out in this way, “these are the first users of this method of payment”, she adds. The trend is spreading nationwide. In 2021, the use of mobile payment has doubled among Pixpay users. “In January 2021, 7% of transactions were carried out via Apple Pay or Google Pay, compared to 13% in December 2021”, details the co-founder of Pixpay.

“Ambivalent consumption”

“Young people have an ambivalent consumption, says Caroline Ménager. They try to develop more eco-responsible consumption but are often held back by their small budgets. Vinted, which allows you to buy second-hand without spending too much, is one of the ten most consumed brands by Ile-de-France residents aged 10 to 17. On average, these young people carry out 5 transactions per month, purchases of around 12 euros.

What to buy a McDo. The brand, followed by Apple and Franprix, is one of the three brands preferred by young Ile-de-France residents. Fond of restaurants and fast food, they spend 39% more than the average on food. “Young people have a social consumption and spend especially when they go out with each other, explains Caroline Ménager. This is all the more true in Ile-de-France, where young people have more opportunities for outings. »
