Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles aren’t quite ready, but they’re already stunning

They are stunning, the new Ninja Turtles. Although the film is not yet finished (Ninja Turtles Teenage Years by Jeff Rowe and Kyler Spears will not be in theaters until August 9), the public at the Annecy Festival, made up of animation professionals and fans, gave a general ovation to the return of the pizza-loving brothers and martial arts enthusiasts… A real crush, for its unique aesthetics and for what the film tells: A dantesque fight between the brothers and other mutants.

“We played on the teenage side of the heroes, both in their way of speaking and in their design, explains director Jeff Rowe to 20 minutes. Since Spider-Man: Next Generation paved the way, the studios are less hesitant to allow scriptwriting and graphic experiments. »

Less chilly, that’s the trend. We could see it the day before with the screening of the incredible short film The Spider Within by Jarell Dampier, in which Miles Morales, also the hero of the recent Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Versee, suffers from depression.

Recognize yourself on screen

“Today, the public wants characters in which it can identify, insists Jeff Rowe. With daily concerns. We have emphasized this point so that young spectators, but also their parents, feel close to the turtles. The dialogues are said by real teenagers to give a natural side to the whole by embroidering around the screenplay written by Seth Rogen. The quartet becomes more and more endearing while his mentor, the rodent Splinter, also experiences a nice makeover.

“For the aesthetics of the whole, we also chose to abandon the smooth aspect of previous adaptations to play with perspectives and textures”, insists Jeff Rowe. This cocktail of humor and action works so well that we would forget that certain passages were being finalized. “This screening gave us a great dose of enthusiasm to go home and finish the film,” says Jeff Rowe. We can’t wait to see it finished, as it is already magnificent in this working copy.
