After Volkswagen recently extensively revised its electric entry-level model ID3, it is now the turn of the bigger brothers ID4 and ID5. Visually, not much has changed, but there is a noticeable difference in technology, which should please customers.

First things first: the sports version of VW ID4 GTX / ID5 GTX is slowly becoming one. The almost 4.60 meter long electric crossover cannot uproot trees even after the facelift, but the performance increase of the all-wheel drive from 220 kW / 299 PS to 250 kW / 340 PS is always decent. However, the top speed will continue to be capped at 180 km/h, and the occupants can look forward to a newly tuned chassis that fits a little better than before, because the spread between comfort and sportiness is noticeably larger than before. The basic version of the electric ID double pack has an output of 125 kW / 170 PS / 310 Nm and, in conjunction with the small 52 kWh battery pack, has to make do with a low charging speed of 115 kilowatts.

The new volume model of the VW ID4 and ID5 is likely to be the so-called Pro-Performance version with the larger 77 kWh battery pack, the technology of which was borrowed from the ID Buzz XL. The two electric crossovers with rear-wheel drive offer an impressive increase in output to 210 kW / 286 hp and an impressive 545 Nm of torque, which is not only noticeable when sprinting. So far, the limit was 310 Nm. In addition, ID4 / ID5 Pro Performance are allowed to drive at speeds of 180 km/h. However, the charging capacity remains unchanged at 135 kilowatts. Only the two more powerful all-wheel drive vehicles with 299 and 340 hp refuel at the pump with up to 175 kilowatts.

The infotainment display, which has now grown from 10.0 or 12.0 inches to 12.9 inches, and whose content has been completely redesigned, makes a significant step forward. It can be operated much better and more clearly than before by the driver or front passenger and now listens to the voice control. The operating sliders for the automatic climate control under the central display are illuminated and the revised head-up display – technically borrowed from the higher-class ID7 – is also appealing with its simplified display options. On longer journeys, the intelligent route planning makes itself felt in a pleasant way, adapting the charging stops to the speed and traffic conditions. The automatic preconditioning ensures that the intermediate stops are significantly faster. Routes with up to ten charging stops and ten intermediate destinations can be planned on the smartphone or in the web portal and then transferred to the ID models. Also new: the optional exit warning system, which warns the occupants of passing traffic when the door is opened.
