A class 206A submarine, in service with the German Navy from 1973 to 2010, is coming to the museum. But how can such a vehicle, which is almost 50 meters long and weighs 500 tons, be transported there?

After weeks of transport by water, the decommissioned submarine U17 has reached its destination. The almost 50 meter long and 500 ton vehicle arrived at the natural harbor in Speyer on Wednesday without any problems, as a spokeswoman for the Technik Museum Speyer announced. The submarine left Mannheim early in the morning for its last water leg.

The trip started three weeks ago in Kiel, where the submarine was hoisted onto a floating pontoon. Then it went via the Kiel Canal and the North Sea to Rotterdam and then up the Rhine past Cologne, Mainz and Mannheim to Speyer.

The submarine is now being prepared for road transport, the spokeswoman said. According to the information, the U17 should arrive at the Technik Museum Speyer on Sunday. Some work will be carried out there on the steel colossus before it is expected to be delivered to the Technik Museum in Sinsheim in Baden-Württemberg in 2024. From 1973 to 2010 the class 206A submarine was in service with the German Navy.
